The second tutorial is The Path.  This may be beneficial to those of you who struggles with the leaps in thinking in 101 or are more visual thinkers.

# Please note that a previous post has material relating to the holiday homework and study material.

In class on Wednesday 15th we viewed the first 25 min of The Tillman Story.  It is a documentary of the death of an NFL player who joined the Rangers and was killed.  It explores how his story was manipulated and why it was according to his friends and family.  The parallel in ideas between this an Foe are interesting.  You can find the documentary on iView at http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/tillman-story/ZX9411A001S00#playing

# Please not this is only available on iView for the next 10 days.

In class on Thursday 16th we viewed a number of videos exploring the manipulation of stories in the media or by the authors themselves.

Brian Williams is an NBC journalist and ‘re-wrote’ his experiences in the Iraq War and got caught.  The first video is the original news item.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyo506gcnZ4

The second video is a comparison of several videos over the 15 years.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-WtAFa8Jlo

The third video is Jon Stewart’s response – a possible text type model.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAggWBbAkMY

Belle Gibson is a health guru who lied about having cancer to create a motivation for people to follow her diet and online presence.  Here is some background to her story:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoIl_K3mXy0

Here is the 60 minute segment exposing her fraudulent behavior.  In this you should also note how the program manipulates her story to gain ratings etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsw90DY5gEI

Helen Demedenko is part of the audience in this 2006 edition of Insight.  The episode is about lies more general but at 5 min Helen tries to explain why she falsely claimed to be someone she was not to sell a book she wrote. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouappZ-hGNo
