We also watched this clip as a way of summing up at the midpoint of the novel:

Passage Analysis Skills

You may find it useful to get another explanation of how to do close analysis.  The only text book available for literature has a very good outline and while it only uses one passage rather than three to write a response the example and response are on The Great Gatsby so you should find that the process is easy to follow.  All you then need to layer in is how to mix up your insights and evidence from more than one passage.

Here is a short piece of audio of me explaining what there is that is helpful in this extract.

Kaleidoscope Project Example

As the kaleidoscope project is a fairly open ended task you could have a tendency to go overboard with your notes and thus take a lot longer to do the activity.  Below is an example of the sort of annotation you have in your book – in this example you will notice I have annotated anything and everything that has meaning or potential for being discussed.  I have also attached the same passage but completed for the project – it has far less annotation as I have only focused on those aspects that I would use to discuss the concepts I have identified.  This example took me 4 minutes to complete as we had recently discussed the passage and none of the thinking was new.

Sample Passage Analysis Essay

While you completed the same task in The Tempest unit it is worth refreshing the skills by looking over an example response.  The below scan shows an annotated set of passages and plan completed in 25 minutes and a written response completed in 1 hour.  You will have 2 hours and 15 minutes to do this in your exam which means you should be able to match the quality.

Year 12 Literature – The Cat’s Table

This is the unit materials for The Cat’s Table.  Below you will find the general unit outline and materials for the section reviews and handouts.  I will also gradually add the podcasts for each section as they are recorded.

THE CATS TABLE BOOKLET 2015

In our first lesson we will also use the following clips to hear from the author about his novel:

A reading – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdYW8LuJlF0

An interview – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3xjNXN–j0

An Indian Literary Festival – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzcDjsFE4DA

A longer interview at the same festival (you may need to open in something other than Google) – http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/just-books/michael-ondaatje-on-his-book-the-cat-s-table/222990

A long radio interview – http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/Writers+and+Company/2011/ID/2164572007/

You may also find this resource interesting – it is in essence a study guide for the text with good summaries of characters, images and themes.  To be read as an interpretation and not an answer.  Cats Table Bookclub in a Box

I will supply you with a set of passages for your kaleidoscope.
